World Games: Unified Sports Floorball Tournament

Korea 2013 - Floorball Teams

We headed to Gangneung in the morning for Floorball, the first Unified Sports Experience event. Floorball is similar to floor hockey and is apparently really popular! This year, Floorball is an exhibition sport and is being played for the first time during these Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang. Jenny, Karl, and Cecily were all divided into different teams and got to play amongst athletes and other All-Star Fans including NBA legend Sam Perkins.

But, the real stars of the game were the very talented athletes from Sweden, Ireland, and Russia.

They all got to play two games, and Jenny led her team to victory! Medals were awarded to all participants and the All-Star Fans presented Floorball sticks to the athletes.

After the Unity Sports game, we got a chance to hear Joyce Banda, the current President of Malawi, speak at the Global Development Summit. The Global Development Summit is an opportunity for global leaders, athletes, and Special Olympics board members to discuss inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities in developing countries.

Soon after the Global Development Summit, we continued preparing for the Brightspot sponsored Unity Sports Alpine Skiing event and Apres Ski Reception. We are excited to have Olympic snowboarding gold medalist, Hannah Teter participating in our event!

At 5:30PM, we attended the LA 2015 reception. The mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, and the LA Games Organizing Committee (GOC) gave a preview to the upcoming Special Olympics Summer Games, which will be held in Los Angeles in 2015.  We met Special Olympian and LA 2015 GOC board member, Debi Anderson, who contributed to the design of the LA 2015 logo. We mingled with Olympic athletes Dan Jensen and Bart Conner, and another NBA legend, Dikembe Mutombo. We also introduced ourselves to the LA GOC leadership team. We talked to Rob Freedman of Lionsgate about their big plans for hosting the 2015 games. The LA games will feature three new exhibition sports including open water swimming, triathalon, and beach volleyball.

We ended the night with a big plate of a fried potato medley!
