Promo

In This Guide

A promo is a "teaser" that encourages a visitor to view the associated item, which increases engagement with your website.

Overview of Promos

Positioning a promo on a page
Promos typically appear next to a rendered asset. For example, the following illustration shows two promos appearing under a video. The promos are not obvious enough to distract the visitor from watching the video, but they are prominent enough to catch the visitor's interest and increase engagement.

Asset With Promo

Some pages do not have a main asset (such as the video in the previous example). For example, the following illustration shows a page containing press releases from Brightspot; there is no main asset, just a list of related assets.

Tag with promo

The number of promos on a given page and where they are positioned is very much a matter of web design and a knowledge of your audience.

For information about inserting promos into individual assets, see Adding a promo to an asset.

Components of a promo
A promo typically includes the following components: title, description, label, and image. (Some publications do not include all these components in their promos.)

Promo components

Every time you create an asset, Brightspot automatically creates its associated promo. The following table describes the sources for an asset's default promo.

Adding a promo to an asset

When you create an asset, you can assign to it a promo. Visitors who see the asset also see the promo.

The following procedure explains how to assign a single promo to a single asset. In enterprise environments, publishers typically design shared modules containing promos, and assign those shared modules to multiple assets. For details, see Shared.

To add a promo to an asset:

    1. In the content edit page, open or create the asset in which you want the promo to appear.
    2. Toward the right of the widget, select more_horiz > Overrides. A widget appears.
    3. Expand Layout Overrides. Drop-down lists AboveAside, and Below appear for the module's position. For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram in Module overview.
    4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Setting the site layout.
    5. Click add_circle_outline, and select Promo. A form appears.
    6. From the Item list, select one of the following:
      • Internal—The promoted item is part of your Brightspot project and uses a standard layout.
      • External—The promoted item is at a URL external to your Brightspot project.
      • No Link—The promoted item is part of your Brightspot project and uses a customized layout you can configure.
    7. Using the table below as a reference, design the promo.

Your Promo form looks similar to the following:

    Customizing a promo

Brightspot generates an asset's default promo from the headline, body, lead image, and section. In some scenarios, the default promo may not be attractive enough to catch a visitor's attention. This section describes how to customize a promo so that it is different from the default promo that Brightspot automatically creates.

    To customize a promo:

    1. Search for and open the asset for which you want to customize a promo.
    2. Toward the right of the widget, select more_horiz > Overrides. A widget appears.
    3. Under Promo Overrides, modify the following fields as required:
      • Promo Title—The promo's title.
      • Promo Description—The promo's description.
      • Promo Image—Image appearing in the promo.
      • Promo Category—Category associated with the promo.
      • Promo Category Link—Asset that visitor sees after clicking the promo's category.
      • For an illustration of these components, see the illustration in Overview of promos.
    4. Complete your site's workflow and publish the asset.
