Once editors discuss, review and approve the pitch, related assignments are generated that cover all of the necessary line items needed for that piece of content to be published and pushed out to your audiences.

When a user presents a potential topic, event or story idea, a Pitch is created. It can be shared with a team with the end goal of generating content based around that idea. Pitches can be shared with entire teams or select members (or kept private), depending on user preferences. Once a Pitch gets approved, team leads can create Assignments related to it in order to see the piece of content to publish.


Assignments are requests for content needed to cover a topic, event or story, and often include detailed information about the usage and expectations for the requested content. Each Assignment has its own, individual workflow, and like with Pitches, Assignments can be shared with all or only some team members. Assignments also include important information, like urgency, due date, assignees, status and other information and resources, like attachments.

More dashboard highlights

Tracking and monitoring pitches and assignments is made easy for editors thanks to the feature-rich dashboard, which provides real-time updates as Assignments are updated and content is created and submitted to help them along to completion.

The dashboard provides teams with two views: Board View or List View. Both views can be searched, filtered, sorted and grouped as needed, per user. These tailored views can then be saved for future use, exported for external reporting, or printed for planning and budgeting meetings. Each also helps editors easily find past-due assignments that might need a little extra attention.

Brightspot also helps you achieve timelier feedback with real-time, configurable notifications that keep all team members on the same page.

The CMS includes default notifications for both pitches and assignments:

  • Pitch Notifications let team members know when Pitches are modified, when an Assignment is created that references the Pitch, and when content is created that reference the Pitch.
  • Assignment Notifications let the Assignment’s creator, editor and assignee(s) know when the Assignment is modified, or when content is created that references the Assignment.

Editorial calendars

Even when you’re using Brightspot for other purposes, in-progress work can remain visible in an Editorial Calendar widget on your dashboard. The widget displays Assignments for the upcoming week on their due date as well as any content that has been scheduled for a future date, and can be customized to display information by day or month.

Additionally, if you want to paginate or filter to only display a certain content type, Brightspot can do that for you, too.
