On the Record with Rose: Ruth Amaya de Zelaya

image of Brightspot employee Ruth Amaya de Zelaya

Ruth Amaya de Zelaya is often one of the first people Brightspot employees see when coming to the office, sharing made-to-order counter drinks at the barista station and essential support throughout Brightspot HQ each day. Here, Rose sits down with Ruth to learn about her role at Brightspot and how she makes the company a brighter place each day.

How long have you worked for Brightspot? What brought you here?
I have worked for Brightspot for six years. My brother worked in the same building and told me about the open position. I had my interview with Alfred Garcia, Brightspot's Chief Operating Officer, and six years later, here I am.

Can you tell me more about your role? What is a typical day like for you?
I mostly work in the barista station and I make sure that everything is in stock and organized. The company provides lunch for employees working at Brightspot HQ on a daily basis, so I also make sure that everything is organized and under control during lunch time.

Last month, you celebrated your six-year anniversary at Brightspot. How has the company evolved in that time?
While Brightspot has grown a lot in size during this time, the company has also grown in generosity and has become more dedicated to giving back to the community.

I know you've participated in a lot of different mission activities during your time at Brightspot. Is there a particular mission activity or event that stands out as your favorite?
My favorite was visiting the Salvation Army Angel Tree warehouse to help distribute gifts to families in 2020. I had a great time helping and enjoyed seeing the happiness and excitement among the families.

Besides the people, what is your favorite part about working at Brightspot?
My favorite part about working at Brightspot is that everyone is treated equally and with respect.

What's the best piece of career or life advice that you've ever received?
The best piece of advice that I've received is to always work hard and that it is never too late to learn new things.

What are your favorite activities or hobbies to do outside of the office?
I like going to Shenandoah National Park with my family and enjoy going to my son's soccer games on the weekends.

What is your favorite coffee drink?
I love the almond milk latte.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to go to Paris. I've heard that it's a very beautiful city with a lot of great museums.

If you could have any superpower, which would like to have? Why?
I would like to be able to be in different places at the same time. I dislike having to choose between events when there is a time conflict.
