What GEO actually asks of your CMS

Comparison charts tell you which content management systems claim AI-readiness. Almost none show you what that readiness looks like once a page actually goes live.

What a feature list can’t show you

Evaluating a CMS for AI-readiness used to mean running through a feature list. Schema.org support. API access. Structured content modeling: typed fields instead of one long block of rich text.

None of that tells you what a page looks like to a large language model (LLM) once it’s actually live.

That’s the gap. Comparison charts tell you whether a platform lists GEO as a feature. Some vendors have gone further and shipped real tooling around it, content-gap finders, draft generators, brief tools.

But what do LLMs actually read once your page is live. That’s a potential gap that doesn’t announce itself. It costs you a citation here, a mention there, quietly, one page at a time.

GEO and SEO aren’t the same problem

The Brightspot Toolkit, a browser extension our product team shipped this spring, and how it came together is a better answer to “what does GEO-readiness look like” than any comparison chart.

The Toolkit’s story starts somewhere else entirely. Editors kept switching between a live page and the CMS back end just to fix a headline or check a component, and that back-and-forth was constant friction. SEO analysis was an obvious thing to add once the team started building past that first problem.

GEO wasn’t the same kind of addition. It’s a distinct check on how content actually appears to large language models, separate from how it appears to a search crawler. Basima Zafar, who helped build the Toolkit, had spent time doing content modeling and SEO work at Brightspot before that.

“I was doing all the models, all the SEO requirements,” she remembers. “From that knowledge, I just knew what people were actually using.”

SEO tells you if a search engine can rank your page. GEO tells you if an AI system can read it, trust it and cite it. Building both into the same panel doesn’t make them the same question.

What actually determines whether an AI system cites you

Three things, and none of them show up cleanly on a vendor’s feature list.

Real-time visibility, first. Title tags, meta descriptions, link health and how the page reads to an LLM, checked the moment you publish, not in a quarterly audit that finds out three months late.

Accessibility an editor can fix, second. Toolkit runs an automated WCAG 2.1 AA audit right in the browser: alt text, contrast, heading structure.

“Historically, you have to either ask somebody to run an accessibility check or file a ticket,” says Vicki Tran, a former Brightspot product manager who worked on the extension’s early development. Most of those fixes are things an editor can do directly, once they can actually see the problem.

Brightspot integrates accessibility throughout its CMS platform and delivery processes. The focus spans design, development, content creation and QA, ensuring inclusive digital experiences from the ground up.

Structural legibility, third. Raw content and API data, visible in the same panel, so a team can check whether the underlying structure is clean, not just whether the rendered page looks fine.

Handle only one or two of these and you’ll leak visibility somewhere. Handle all three, in the workflow, and you’ve built the thing comparison charts only describe in the abstract.

The accessibility story is the clearest proof of the whole argument

Accessibility wasn’t a checklist item on Zafar’s list. It was personal.

“My mom is visually impaired,” she says, “so I care a lot about making sites as accessible as possible.”

She walked her team through a session where her mother navigated a website in real time using assistive technology. Nothing dramatic surfaced. Missing alt text. Low contrast. Vague heading structure. Small oversights, and each one mattered to someone who depended on the software reading the page correctly.

“It should be like ‘man in blue shirt holding a white cup,’” she says, describing what good alt text actually looks like. “Not just ‘man holding a cup.’”

That specificity is the whole argument in miniature. GEO-readiness comes down to a series of small, fixable details, and whether your team catches them at the moment of publish or three months after a page has already lost visibility.

Brightspot vs. the AI: A real-world view from the data

I track Brightspot’s AI citation data myself, through a platform we use called Profound, and I pulled the numbers when researching this piece for context.

Over the past 90 days, on CMS platforms and GEO/AEO, brightspot.com is the most-cited domain of anyone. Not the most-mentioned CMS. The most-cited source, ahead of analyst sites, competitor blogs, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, everything an AI model reaches for when it researches this topic. 3.7% citation share. The next domain sits at 3.3%.

Let’s be clear: none of the above amounts to a landslide. It’s a lead of half a point over the next-closest source, and the numbers move week to week.

But it’s real, and it’s earned the same way the Toolkit got built: by a team that actually looks at what an AI system sees, instead of guessing from the moment you hit publish.

Teams that build GEO visibility into how they operate every day, not into a quarterly review, will have real data to point to in a matter of weeks, if not days. Anyone treating this as a line item on a vendor-selection spreadsheet will still be guessing.

Check what your own CMS shows you the moment you hit publish. If the honest answer is “nothing,” that’s the gap this piece is about.
